• Scissors and a lighter or fabric glue (to seal the ends)
• Measuring tape (or just a piece of string)
• Optional: beads, a tassel, or a small charm for the center

Step 1: Cut and Prep Your Ribbon

Measure around the graduate's neck and shoulders — the lei should sit comfortably below the collarbone. Standard length is 120cm (47in). Cut 6 ribbons to your length plus 20cm extra for finishing. Seal each cut end with a quick pass of the lighter so the ribbon doesn't fray.

Step 2: The Three-Strand Braid

The classic lei uses a simple 3-strand braid. Group your 6 ribbons into 3 pairs (one color per pair, or mix-and-match), knot the top ends together, then braid like you would hair:
