MOQ Explained: What Is the Minimum Order for Custom Graduation Leis?

MOQ - minimum order quantity - is the first number that stops a lot of buyers. You want 30 custom leis for a small program and the supplier says 500. Conversation over.

It does not have to end there. Here is what MOQ actually represents, what ours are, and how to work around one when your quantity is genuinely small.

Our Actual Minimums

These are deliberately low. Many factories in this category set 500 or 1,000 as the floor. We keep it at a dozen for stock items because small orders from schools frequently become large orders the following year.

Why MOQ Exists at All

MOQ is not a sales tactic. It reflects real setup costs that do not scale down:

• Color changeover. Switching the weaving line to a new ribbon color takes time whether you are making 20 pieces or 2,000.
• Print plate or embroidery file setup. A custom year plate or mascot embroidery file costs the same to prepare regardless of run length.
• Sampling. We produce a physical sample before bulk. That sample costs the same for a 20-piece order as a 10,000-piece order.
• Minimum material purchase. Ribbon is bought in rolls. A custom color means buying a full roll even if you need a fraction of it.

When the MOQ is high at other suppliers, it usually means their setup costs are high or they are a trading company passing along a factory's minimum with margin attached.

Standard vs Custom: Why the Numbers Differ

Standard colors have a low MOQ because the material is already in stock and the line runs those combinations regularly. There is no setup to amortize.

Custom colors and embroidery carry a higher MOQ because each of the setup costs above applies fresh to your order alone.

This is the single biggest lever on a small order: if you can accept one of our six stock combinations - pink/white, green/white/red, orange/white/blue, light blue/white, maroon/white, blue/yellow - your minimum drops to 12 pieces and your price drops too.

How to Work With a MOQ When Your Order Is Small

1. Check stock colors first. Hold a color swatch against your school colors. "Close enough at 12 pieces" often beats "exact at 500."
2. Combine with another group. Two departments, two schools in a district, or a school plus its booster club can place one order and split delivery.
3. Order for two years. Leis do not expire. If you know next year's count, order both years together and cross a better price tier.
4. Customize the accessory, not the lei. A stock lei with a custom printed sash or a custom charm reaches a personalized result at a lower minimum.
5. Ask anyway. A published MOQ is a default, not a wall. Tell us your quantity and timeline; if the line has capacity we can often accommodate.

MOQ and Price Are Different Questions

Meeting the MOQ gets your order accepted. It does not get you the best price - that comes from quantity tiers, which sit well above the minimum.

What Happens After You Meet the MOQ

The process is the same at 20 pieces as at 10,000:

1. Confirm design, colors and quantity
2. We produce a physical sample within 7 days
3. You approve the sample
4. Bulk production runs 15-30 days depending on quantity
5. Shipment by sea or air depending on your deadline

Small orders are not deprioritized. The sample step and quality inspection are identical.
